Dodital Trek is one of the most beautiful treks in Uttarakhand. Dodital is an emerald lake nestled amidst high mountains at an altitude of 3310 mts above sea level. With its serene setting and tranquil environs, Dodi Tal is arguably one of the most beautiful high altitude lakes of North India.
Dodital is said to be the birth place of Lord Ganesh, and is also the source of the Assi Ganga, a tributary to the Bhagirathi. It is named after the rare Dodi (Himalayan Trout) that can be found in this lake. A moderate trek which starts from the Bhagirathi valley, goes up to the lake of Dodital (wrapped in perfect wilderness) to the alpine meadows and tops out at Darwa Pass (4150m). Traditionally this trek has been continuously used by the Gujjars, the herdsmen who get their buffalos to the high meadows every summer and occasionally by the pilgrims/sadhus walking between Gangotri and Yamunotri.
Dodital is named after the rare Himalayan Trouts known as Dodi in the local language. This lake is one of the very few water bodies where Himalayan Trouts are found.
On one corner of the lake, a beautiful temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. According to mythology, this is the place where Lord Ganesha was born. The circumference of the lake is 1.5kms with dense deodar trees all around it. Dodi Tal can be reached in two days by trekking 22 kms from Sangam Chatti. The trekking to Dodi Tal is easy but the trail gets moderate if you trek towards. A wide range of imposing Himalayan ranges can be seen from Darwa Top.
You will start the beautiful drive from Dehradun to Uttarkashi and further on to Agoda. This is a pleasant drive and we will stop a couple of times to take short breaks/lunch. We will get down at Sangam Chatti & from here we will trek to Agoda village where we will be camping for the night. It’s a good warm up hike for the days to come. Overnight stay at Agoda.
Wake up to the chirping of birds and enjoy a hot cuppa tea/coffee. After having breakfast, set out on the trail which ascends gradually from Agoda through a mix forest high above the Asi Ganga before entering a side valley leading to Dodital. There is a substantial Gujar settlement at Majhi (3150 m), about 5 kms before Dodital. We take a pit stop here and enjoy our packed lunch. From Manjhi the hike is through rhododendron, oak, pine and bamboo forest. Late afternoon we will arrive at the beautiful lake. Tired bones and bodies will get rejuvenated by the serene beauty of this place. We will set campsite by the lake and soak in the natural beauty. Overnight at Dodital.
Today group members will have the choice of either staying back at Dodital and exploring the lakeside areas or going on the climb to Darwa pass. For Darwa pass we will start early as the climb to the summit is going to take some time and effort. The initial climb from Dodital is pleasant through meadows currently under snow and lined up with rhododendron trees. The climb towards the end is steep but not very long. Once at the top one is rewarded with a magnificent view of the majestic Himalayas. The range of peaks stretch beyond Gangotri as far as Nanda Devi. To the north, the Bandarpunch peak dominates the upper part of the valley. To the North-West, Swargarohini I (6252 m) rises above the Har-ki-Dun valley. We will spend some time at the top and take pictures before retracing our steps towards Dodital. Get back to the camp and celebrate the successful summit of the pass with hot masala tea and some crispy pakodas. Overnight at Dodital
Today we trek back towards Agoda village. It’s a relatively easy walk as the trail is mostly downhill. After reaching Agoda, one has an option of hiking to the village & interact with the villagers. Overnight stay at Agoda
After breakfast we will trek for about 2 hours to reach Sangam Chatti. It’s a beautiful walk through the village of Agoda. On arrival your board your vehicle and drive down to Dehradun. We will reach Dehradun by late evening. The trip end here.
